# Michelin Collection XAS – A Legacy of Innovation ## Revolutionizing Performance with Asymmetry The Michelin XAS redefined what a tire could achieve when it was introduced in 1965. As the world’s first production tire featuring an asymmetrical tread design, it set a new benchmark for handling and stability that remained unmatched throughout the 1970s. This groundbreaking design mimics natural asymmetry—much like the human foot—where the inner and outer sections perform distinct functions. By optimizing the tread pattern, sidewall, and crown for their specific roles, the XAS delivers balanced performance, enhanced grip, and precise control. ## Engineered for Excellence Built to handle speeds up to 210 km/h, the XAS was the first of its kind to meet such demanding performance standards. Its exceptional cornering stability and all-condition traction made it a favorite not only on the road but also on the track, where it proved its capabilities in Formula France, circuit races, rallies, and hill climbs. What made the XAS special? It introduced asymmetrical tread technology that improved handling by allowing each side of the tire to perform a unique role—providing better balance and control. It was also among the first tires engineered for high-speed endurance, making it a pioneer in performance tire development..
